When Thomas Edison first purchased his Fort Myers winter home in 1885 he was well aware of its picturesque potential. Henry Ford and his wife began visiting the Edison's in 1896, spending more than 15 winters soaking up sun in Southern Florida. Edison finally convinced Ford to purchase his own winter home in 1916. The two continued to vacation in Fort Myers until their deaths. Edison credited his amazing productivity to the time he spent in Fort Myers, stating that the quiet countryside helped him concentrate. Ford also made some of his most important vehicular discoveries in Fort Myers, creating what would quickly become one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers. Today, the homes stand as icons of productivity and creativity, forever linked to two of the nation's most prolific thinkers.
